ANOTHER BY-ELECTION

ERROR IN ELECTION EXPENSES. GOVERNMENT DEFEAT LIKELY.' [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust nnd N.Z Cabin Association.] (Received Tuesday, 7 p.m.) LONDON, April 1. The “Daily Express” says Mr George Lloyd Davies, an Independent Pacifist M.P., has applied for the stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds, owing to his discovery of an error of £2 in his election expenses, which was not due to his fault. The hy-election will probably result in the loss of a Government seat. [The forests of the Chiltern Hills used to be infested with robbers and the “Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds” was appointed to check them. A member of Parliament not being allowed to vacate his seat, the only way to resign is to apply for the stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds, which, being a Crown office, necessarily caused his seat to be vacated. Of course, at the present day, this la a convenient fiction only, for such stewardship Is now merely nominal].
