HERESY AND SCHISM.

AMERICAN METHODISTS DIVIDED SECRET CONTROVERSY BROUGHT INTO OPEN. [By Electric Cable— Copyright.] (Altai, and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Monday, 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 2. A telegram from Philadelphia says the fundamentalist and modernist controversy promises to split local church circles, especially since the announcement that the Rev. Paul Chapman, one of the advanced theologians of the Methodist Conference, and pastor of a local church, has applied for admission to the Unitarians. The Rev. Chapman Informed his Bishop that his advanced views on doctrinal subjects made necessary his withdrawal from the Methodist Communion, which requires its ministers to subscribe to fundamental doctrines. This brings into the open a dispute which has been secretly raging in the various denominations in this city since the Bible controversy was precipitated throughout the nation. Many Methodist ministers have rallied to the Rev. Chapman’s support, and it is expected the schism will spread locally as widely as elsewhere.
