SPRING SHOW

MEETING OP A. AND P. COMMITTEE. The committee of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association met yesterday when arrangements in connection with the coming show were, discussed Mr.. K. W. Dalxymple presided. A grant of £25 toward the funds of the association was received from the Manawatu-Wanganul provincial council.—Received and a vote of thanks accorded the council. The Cheltenham and Tiakitahuna Dairy companies wrote declinin g to assist the association by way of financial donation, the latter expressing itself in accord with the show. —Received. A ROYAL SHOW. Correspondence was read from the New Zealand Council of Agriculture relative to the proposal to form a Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand together with forms to be signed by prospective members. The letters pointed out that the objects of the Royal Society would be to promote the welfare of the agricultura.l and pastoral industries of New Zealand by encouraging the. exhibition of stock and produce in accordance with the provisions of the A. and P. Society's Act, 1908. Petitions were enclosed, urging the Government to provide for an Order-in-Council incorporating the Society under the Act. A more recent letter from the council of agriculture suggested that the spring show should bo used as an opportunity to secure the signatures of breeders and others for membership. The primary object of the society, of course, would be to hold a Royal Show in New Zealand. The subscription asked was £1 1/-. The petition forms were circulated among members for signature and the secretary stated 'that Messrs. J. A. Nash, M.P., and Henry Lethbridge had agreed to undertake this work at the show. NORTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION.

The acting secretary, North Island A. and P. Association wrote in refer-, ence to the relationship between A. and P. associations and the newlyformed New Zealand Showmen's Association, and enclosing the following resolution: "That it be a recommendation to affiliated associations not to accept the offer of the Showmen's Association under present conditions and that each association should control its own pround, subject to all permits being sanctioned by the local police." The letter also suggested an affiliation fee of 5/- per 100 members, with a minimum of 20/-. The meeting- re-appointed Messrs. Henry Lethbridge, J. M. Johnston and, M. A. Conway as the committee's dc-, legates at the conference at the show. LIFE MEMBERSHIP.

A letter was received on behalf of Mr. George Murray, of Lake Tekapo, who offered to become a life member of the association for the sum of £lO 10/-, otherwise he could not see his way to remain a noember of the association.

"Air. S. R.- Lancaster voiced the contention that the present subscription for life membership—£ls—was too high. He considered that the association was losing life members by this fact, and he gave notice to move at the next meeting that the amount be reduced to £lO.

Others members agreed wiht this contention, and stated that they had been approached in the matter.

EDUCATION BOARD'S SPACE.

A communication was read from the Education Board, acknowledging receipt of a donation of £6, and asking that as the board had entered the usual number of exhibits, the associa. tion should reconsider the question of a larger grant. The chairman explained that the Education Board occupied 240 ft. of space free of charge, the approximate value of which was £l2, and in addition to that, it received a donation of £5. The committee decided to tak«> no aotlon in the direction asked. NEW MEMBERS. The following new members were elected, of Palmerston North, unless otherwise stated: Messrs. W. Sinclair, Newbury; A. L. Osborne, Rongotea; A. C. Robinson, K. C. Clayton, R. Car-ruthers, J. T. Fox, H. McCartney, G. H. Espiner, G. Kilgour, D. A. Scott, Aokautere; A. E. Anderson, Plriaka: H. M. Blundsn, . Kakariki; F. Mr. J. Balsillie presented a report on the result of the operations of the canvassing committees. It was impossible, he said, to present an accurate statement, as the campaign was not completed. As far as could be judged, however, he estimated that from the country they had received subscriptions totalling £SB 11/6; from the town £231 11-; and from the committee £27S 15/-; making a,' total of £568 13/6. There were, however, the Wellington subscriptions to come in yet, which he estimated, would amount to £335 10/-. This would bring the total to £904 3/6. This amount did not compare favouralby with last year's total, which reached the £I4OO mark. The speaker advocated a more energetic canvass on the part of committee members, and complained that many of those appointed had failed to turn up when required. It was decided that the four canvassing committees should meet and make satisfactory arrangements for a final effort. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr. J. A. Nash, M.P., gave notice to move at next meeting: " That the resolution containing the schedule of charges for the letting of show buildings be rescinded, and that the finance committee bring down a new scale of charges." GENERAL. Messrs. Lcthbridge and Kceblc were authorised to co-operate with "Mr. Fowler and the police in regard to the conduct of side shows at the- show. Accounts amounting td £1440 were passed for payment.
