"A DRIFTING VOLCANO."
MR VEITCH ON THE PREMIER A MEDIOCRITY AMID WEAKLINGS. NEGLECTED DEPARTMENTS. [Per Press Association.] (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. Mr Veitcb vas a strong critic of the Government, and of the Prime Ministei'jn particular, during his speech an the financial tefeste to-day. "This Government has been so long on the Treasury Benches, he said, "that it has attached to it a lot of of weak Ministers, who arc unable to administer their Departments in the way they should be. The Prime Minister might be regarded as in the nature of an extinct political volcano. He has come to the end of his usefulness in political life, and is drifting as well as he possibly can § We nave one Minister at the head of the Government who thinks he is running all these Departments, who really imagines lie controls all these Departments of State, and the result has proved disastrous to the finances of the country." Mr Massey greeted these remarks with laughter. "Tho Prime Minister may laugh," said Mr Yeitch, "but we know the Prime Minister's idea. Actually his ability Is not in line with the avcrago citizen of New Zealand."
