Kirkwood broke the course record with seventy for the first eighteen holes in the open championship, barely missing sixty-nine. Sweetzer took ( seventy-nine and Ouimet eighty-two. Entrants who had done sixty-nine on the short tees in the preliminary then equalled Kirkwood's record on the regular tees, which are several hundred yards longer.
