A DANGEROUS ROAD.
EAST STREET CONTROVERSY Although the attendance at the meeting of Bast Street residents, held here on Tuesday, was not large, owing no doubt to the High School concert, those present represented parents who are fully cognisant of the real danger to children and women-folk which exists along this stock route. The road is nearly a mile long, and dozens of children travorse it daily on their way to the three schools situated at its northern end. Bordering on each side of the metalled portion of the road is a heavy growth of rank grass and bogs, and, until quite recently, no sign of a footpath. The Council have taken up the question of laying a footpath, and the work in this connection is being pushed ahead, but while this is a decided improvement, there is still the question of affording protection to school children against cattle. The convener of the mooting, Air T. F. Fitzgerald, together with the other residents of the street who attended the meeting are to be congratulated on the step they have taken in the matter. There has not been an accident as yet, although narrow escapes have been reported, and the residents rightly maintain that some protection should bo erected before someone's child, wife, or mother, sutlers injury, or, maybe, death, by this menace. Stops are now being taken to bring all the resident:, of the thoroughfare together with a view to presenting to the Council tiie scheme adopted, and asking that it be proceeded with forthwith. It is considered that the actual fencing could bo done for under £2OO, and residents are prepared to assist towards the cost. The Beautifying Society are also interested jn the scheme, as there is a splendid opening for members to do some really good work. __
