THE BURGLARY BOOM.
ANOTHER SAFE BLOWN OPEN.
after Effecting daring ENTRY. From enquiries made by a “Manawatu Times” representative yesterday morning, it appears that our nocturnal friend Bill Sykes and his confreres, went a little further afield than the visit to Messrs. Manson and Barr’s establishment in Rangitikei Street, as reported in these columns. A most daring and successful attempt was made recntly to effect an entry to Messrs. Dawbers Ltd.’s premises, also situated in Rangitikei Street, about a fortnight ago. Broadly, the facts are as follow:—One of the members of Messrs. Dawbers’ arrived at work as usual on the Saturday morning, when he discovered that the heavy lock holding the gate at the rear of the premises, had been burst open. On making further enquiries, he discovered that the small safe in the office situated nearer the front of the premises in Rangitikei Street, had been blown open inwards, and the contents ransacked. However, the visitors overlooked a most important thing —apparently the only thing they were seeking—and that was the pay envelopes of several of the employees, who had not collected them on the preceding Whether the burglars were surprised, or merely because they did not investigate sufficiently, is not known, They annexed the petty cash, amounting to £3 2/6, and kindly left the wages. In order to get to the safe, the midnight mauranders did not meet with “plain sailing” altogether, and were obliged to lower themselves into the office. Obviously the criminals are not amateurs or if so, they are receiving a sound apprenticeship. Moreover, the nearness of the office to the street in this instance suggests that the operations are being conducted as silently as up-to-date burglars’ gear will per-* mit.
