THE CAUSE OF THE FLOODS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In the days of Noah the wickedness of the people caused The Deluge. In our days wc are marc — or less; —moral, so that wc must look to mundane things for the cause and the remedy. I cannot speak for Can. terbury and Otago, but in Marl, borough, one of the principal, if not the only cause of the overflow is the stupid practice of planting the creek beds for hundreds of miles with the useless willow. River protection is a different matter,, but the creek bods are simply raised above the adjoining lands by an inch or two every year, and the obvious result is an overflow such as this.—l am etc , ‘'■OLD MA11LBOROV”
