Mr. D. C. Turnbull, snr., member for Timaru, was yesterday elected chairman of the Harbour Board, in succession to Mr. F. J. Rolleston, M.P., retired.
A Sydney cablegram reports the death of Mr. George Holdship, av the age of 84 years, formerly prominent in commercial circles in Auckland. He served in the Maori war. Mr. E. Mooney, who has been connected with the Cambridge Power Board, is t'o take up an appointment ■shortly in Palmerston North. Ho was tendered a farewell social, when a suit case was presented him.
Mr. S. E. Carson, the well known baritone singer, of Palmerston North, is leaving at the end of the month for Eltham, where he will enter business on his own account. His loss will be |a severe one to musical circles, and his willingly-given services to concerts will not be forgotten.
Among the fliftcen new Follows of the Royal Society arc Sir Douglas Mawsow, for scientific exploration, and Dr. MacLeod, co-discovcrcr of insulin, now used for the treatment of diabetes. The Faraday modal was awarded to Sir WillTlim Parsons, the inventor of the turbine.
Mr. R. H. Kempton, a young Audklander who received his Journalistic training on the “New Zealand Herald,” has been appointed pictorial editor of the “ Sun ” newspapers in Melbourne. Mr. Kempton, Is a .son of the Rev. Knowles Kempton. formerly pastor of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle.
