THE MUNICIPAL HALL.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Last Friday evening' I went to hear a very fine and instructive lecture and see some interesting pictures of New Zealand Forestry by Captain Macintosh Ellis, head of the Forestry Department. Only about one hundred people, scattered all over the Municipal Hall, could find time and attention for such an important subject for a short while —about an hour and a half. The cause of this indifference, to say nothing about the discourtesy to the head of one of our big- Government institutions, was no doubt largely due to the fact that there was a big counter-attraction in the Opera House. The Sistine Choir caused in the one building a serious diversion among the audience, as the choir was no doubt more attractive and brighter entertainment. Having two portions of one building devoted to lectures and entertainments is not, in my opinion, desirable. It is very distractive to the audience, and more so to the performers, to listen to counter-singing, music, and even applause. My object in writing is to suggest that if the Borough Council, as stated in the recent loan proposals, want office accommodation, why not make full use of the large and sunny Municipal Hall and convert it into office accommodation for some of the Borough Council's departments.— I am, etc., C. N. CLAUSEN.
