CHINA’S NEED.
SERMON BY VISITING MISSIONARY. Rev. C. McDouall, 8.. A-, Missionary of the Church of China, in Diocese of North China, preached at All Saints Church, Palmerston North, at both services yesterday, and the reverend gentleman is a New Zealander, who also bears the distinction of having been decorated by the Chinese Government, and is just home on leave. The preacher was listened to most attentively. In the morning address, reference was also made to the extraordinary study of the world being made by the leaders of China in every department of life, political, economic, social, industrial and religious. All were being passed over by the Chinese miscroscope; for instance, the social and economic conditions of New Zealand were published in the papers of Pekin. Behind all this questioning of things wherein was a burning desire to discover the secret of western greatness, in order to effect a huge national uplift. It meant a wide-open door for Christian opportunity, and a set an obligation to guard China from being deluded by the surface evidence of greatness. The speaker held that all the best in our civilisation springs from the life and teaching of Christ who was the only effectual foundation for any life, individual or national; and for humanity sake, we ought to demonstrate this to the untold millions of China. At evensong the preacher spoke in general terms of the mission work in China, pointing out the hardships and loneliness of the missionaries. An appeal was also made for financial assistance to enable the work to be carried on. so that the heart thirst and soul thirst of the thousands of heathen should be satisfied. After the evening service Rev, McDouall met a number of parishioners and several pledged themselves to collect a sufficient amount to pay the expenses of sending at least one missionary to China.
