N.S.W. ELECTIONS.

Considerable interest is manifested in the New South Wales State, elections, which took, place on Saturday last. As the preferential voting system is in operation, it will probably be several days before the final result is known. At the present time the indications point to the defeat of the Labour Party. While the Leader of the Opposition expects that the Labourites will be in a minority of six, it is significant that Premier Doolcy declines to make any comment upon the progress returns. This would suggest that he is by no,means optimistic, for the sake of good government, it is to be hoped that the new Ministry will have a greater majority than the old, which had to secure a Speaker from the Opposition benches in order to carry on. The Coalitionists will be dependent upon the Progressives for their accession to and retention of power, so that the latter will exercise an unique position in the Assembly. If they attempt to dominate the policy of the Coalitionists, they will play into the hands of the Labour Party and precipitate another election. The same tiling would happen in New Zealand if the United Party were dependent upon Labour for its accession to power. If Labour sought to dictate a policy, it would merely bring about a dissolution of Parliament.
