SHIPS AND SEAMEN.
W AGIOS CLAIM. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON’, Last Night. Counter-claims have been tiled by the New Zealand Seamen's Federation against the proposals of the shipowners for an Arbitration Court award in respect to seamen engaged on Now Zealand ships. The “Post” is informed that, the proposals of the shipowners carry wages back to the rates ruling under agreement in operation in 1017, and represent a reduction of ft 16/S a month on the wages now paid, except in the case of ordinary seamen, where a reduction of £3 6/8 is asked for. The Federation's counter-proposals suggest a daily rate of wages which is equal to an increase of £2 per calender month on wages current last November. or an increase of 13/4 monthly on the wages now paid. MOEKAKI WITHOUT A CHEW. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. The departure of the Moeraki for Sydney is still uncertain as no crew has been obtained. Air W. T. Young, the Seamen’s Union secretary, stated that yesterday he had received a letter frqm the general manager of the Union Company, requesting the Seamen’s, Federation to procure a crew for (lie vessel. He had replied that under the Shipping and Seamen Amendment Act, ID CO, it would bo illegal for his organisation to attempt to place men on board, and that there is no such provision in the preference clause agreement.
