MANSLAUGHTER.
At Napier recently Mr Justice Reed admitted to probation a farmer who, while in a drunken condition, knocked down a child with his motor cai and caused its death. At Gisborne yesterday the same Judge fined a farmer, who had been found guilty of manslaughter under somewhat similar circumstances, a sum of £IOO and costs. There was no evidence that the Gisborne man was drunk, but there were extenuating circumstances that were not apparent in the ‘Napier case. The heavy fine imposed upon the Gisborne farmer seems to strengthen the protest that has been made against the exceptional leniency displayed in respect to the Napier offence. It is questionable, however, whether even a substantial fine is sufficient to safeguard the public against the reckless drivers of motor car 5.
