ST. HELEN’S HOME.

There would appear to be two elements in Palmerston North pulling in opposite directions in regard to the proposed maternity home. The question at issue is purely and simply one of site. When the campaign was started for funds for a St. Helen’s Home, it was understood that the institution was not to be under the control of the Hospital Board. A large section of the community objects to a maternity ward being attached to the hospital. What, then, is to happen? The funds collected are insufficient to erect a home. Even were a Government subsidy provided, the amount available would fall far short of that required. The only alternatives, therefore, are to throw the responsibility upon the Government and the Hospital Board, utihse the money available in making temporary provision for maternity cases, or hold the whole matter over until another campaign can be organised for funds. Before either of these alternatives are accepted, a clear expression of the opinion of the people should bo given. So far, those who have appeared most prominently in the discussion are certain medical gentlemen, and members of the Friendly Societies. The opinion of the great bulk of the people has not; been ascertained. His Worship the Mayor has called several public meeting's, but these have not given a clear direction as to what form the maternity home shall take, or as to where it shall be erected. With all the facts before it, the public should now be able to give an intelligent expression of opinion upon the subject. We would suggest, therefore, that the Mayor call a mass meeting and take a vote on the question. This would enable the 31inister to arrive at a fairly accurate opinion as to the wishes of'the majority of the people.
