MEAT PRODUCERS’ BOARD.
It may. be somewhat humiliating for the Government to back down from its attitude towards the appointment of a representative of the stock and station agents to the 3leat Producers’ Board. But there was no other course open to it, If it . wished to retain its selfrespect, than to appoint 3lr W. D. Hunt to the position. The fact that the latter had opposed the scheme at its inception was considered by the Prime Minister a few days ago a sufficient justification for a refusal to appoint Mr Hunt to the position. Mr Massey and his colleague, the Minister of Agriculture, have apparently realised that they have made a mistake, and have taken the earliest opportunity of placing themselves on side with Parliament and the producers. The statement made by Mr Hunt can leave no doubt in the minds of the farming community that he will use his utmost endeavours to promote the best interests of the producers as a whole, which he rightly points out are identical with those of the stock and station agents. The Government is to be congratulated upon having done the right thing. The Dominion is also to be congratulated upon having secured the services of a gentleman whose wide knowledge of business and whose personal integrity will make him a tower of strength to the newlycreated Board.
