VALEDICTORY.
A large gathering of residents assembled at the Kairanga Hall for the purpose of recognising in a fitting manner the long services of Mr S. Davey, as mail carrier between Palmerston North and Kairanga. After twenty-five years' continuous and faithful service in that capacity, Mr Davey is relinquishing the position at the end of the year. The function took the form of a social evening. Quite an enjoyable programme was contributed by local talent, assi3ted by visitors from town. The following supplied items: —Miss Levy, songs; Miss Daly, songs; Miss Teale, recitation; Misses Small and Capp, dialogue; Misses Small and Levy, piano duet; Misses Pratt and Miss M. Small, minuet; Mr Toby Pratt, song; Mr O. Lurmeister, recitation; Mr Daly, song and stories. These items were interspersed with dancing. At a suitable interval Mr Davey was presented by the residents with a handsome gold watch, suitably inscribed, Mr Baisillie making the presentation. Mr Martin, postmaster at Kairanga, spoke in high terms of Mr Davey in the very regular and punctual discharge of his duties, his unfailing courtesy and obliging manner. Other speakers, viz., Messrs Matheson, Capp, Coilis and Small spoke in similar terms of the evening's guest. Mr Balsillie detailed the method of obtaining the first mail service to Kairanga. Mr Davey, on rising to respond, was greeted with hearty applause, and the singing of "He's a Jolly. Good Fellow." In a characteristic speech he feelingly thanked the residents for the way they had shown their appreciation of his services and referred to the good feeling that had always existed between himself and the local postmaster and the residents generally. After supper dancing was kept up till about midnight. ____
