In November 316 persons died in New Zealand, and of the tfital 160 were persons who had attained the age of Co years or over. The dairy factory at Oroua Downs was completely destroyed by lire about 10 o’clock on Tuesday night. The building was insured with the South British Company, but the amount is not available.

An Invercargill telegram says: At the Winton Court to-day Harold James Hill pleaded guilty to five charges of arson in connection with the recent epidemic of fires in the township, and was committed for sentence.

Investigations have revealed that the case of anthrax reported recently in Melbourne was due to a shaving brush, which was apparently of British manufacture, but which was really imported from Japan. The attention of the Japanese Government has been directed to the fact that brushes are imported into Australia notwithstanding the embargo.

A Rotorua telegram says;—This morning early a boy aged nine years, sen of Amotawa, lifted his father's gun and pulled the trigger. The charge struck Togo Morrison, who was cleaning his boots on the other side of the road, lodging in his chest, arms and loins, but missing vital parts. The victim is in the King George V. Hospital. A Blenheim telegram says:—The Seddon railway station was broken into last night and the sum of £4 10/ stolen. Constable Byrn within twentyfour hours of the discovery arrested two young men, William Johns Fook and Harry Newall. They admitted the offence at the Magistrate’s Court today, and were committed for sentence at the Supreme Court at Wellington. Information has been received by Mr H. L. Young, president of the Manawalu Swimming Centre, that Warren Pua Kealoha fids cancelled his proposed New Zealand tour. Tall stories are often told by men in the dock, and the plausible explanation so much sought after by transgressors is seldom found. At least, one Magistrate has an eye for the probabilities. "You mean to tell me that you carried those bottles round town with you all Sunday afternoon?" asked Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M., Wellington, of a man who was found emerging from a hotel on the Saobath with suspicious bulges of his clothing, which were found to be caused by two bottles of beer. "Yes, I do,*’ said the gentleman in the dock. “Oh, get out," said the Magistrate, impatiently; "fined 40/ and costs.” The Kelvin Grove Hall was completely destroyed by fire about 12 o’clock yesterday. When the outbreak was discovered it was too late to do anything effectual to save the building, as the flames already had taken charge. The fire apparently started near the entrance to the hall. The destruction of the building means a* very serious loss to the district, as there was still a balance duo in payment for its construction, and for some years past the hall committee had been active in promoting conceal ts and dances to wipe off this debt. The building was insured for £3OO, and a piano (which was saved) for £SO. The total loss on the fire is estimated at £SOO to £7OO.
