SCHOOLS BREAK UP.

PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES. The annual breaking-up ceremonies in connection with the primary schools in Palmerston North were held yesterday. CAMPBELL STREET. The Campbell Street School function was held in the Palace Theatre, where there was a large attendance of the scholars and their parents, Mr A. Mahon chairman of the school committee presiding-. Mr -Mahon and Rev. G. H. Cook briefly addressed the children. During the afternoon elocution competitions were held, a large number of children competing. A musical and vocal programme was given by the following:—Violin solo, Helen Massey; violin selection, Jack Muirhead; chorus songs by the school pupils, and a Rose Dance by the infant pupils. The following were the winners of the prizes for the year:—Dux and Cohen Essay Shield, Violet Webber; sports champion, Duncan McKenzie;' N'.Z.A.S.A. schools champion. Colin McKenzle; jewellers' relay, Colin McKcnzie, Neil Seifert, George Hale and Ivan Jcwett; football (Mr P. X. Jewell's prize for the best forward), Howaid Rickard; headmaster's prize for best tackling. W. Morgan; best allround boy, Royden Trask; Cohen essay competition. Stand. V.. Lornan Newman 1, Ja-s. Campbell 2; standard VI., best essay, Violet Webber. Special mention was made of the essays submitted by D. Mortland, Graham Crossley and E. Redwood. WEST END. The scholars, teachers, and numerous parents gathered in the assembly hall at the West End School yesterday, when the "breaking-up" ceremony was held. Several speeches were made and the children were wished happy holidays. Much interest was taken by the parents in the display of school work, the exhibition being augmented by a very line collection of illustrative pen drawings, sketches and designs, the work of Mr Campbell, one of the masters of the school. Mrs C. H. Whitehead, wife of the chairman of the school committee presented the prizes to the children, for all-round merit on the year's work as follows:—Standard VI., E. Hollier 1, L. Mardon 2, M. Green 3; standard V„ I. Campbell 1, G. Hope 2, P. Bryce 3; standard IV., L. Spring 1. 0. Cooper 2, J. Honore 3; standard 111.. R. Christensen 1, D. Humphrey 2, L. King 3; standard 11., D. Perrin 1. E. Monoghan 2, C. Spring 3. Upper Standard 1., T. Shaw 1. F. Lewis 2. H. Sciverts 3. Lower Standard 1., K. Haselden 1, K. Christensen 2, J. Woodland 3. Headmaster's special: Phyllis Parr. Primer IV., M. Pukolowski 1, M. George 2, M. Healej* 3. Specials: Standard VI. Mr Campbell's prize for progress. Elsie Presnell: standard V., Thoa. FOge (sport). Headmaster's special, (girls' sports): Mavis Spencer. Each infant pupil received a gift. The prizes throughout were books.

COLLEGE STREET. At College Street a similar function was held. In addition to the list of merit card recipients published yesterday the following were also similarly rewarded: —Standard VI.: Special merit in composition, Irene Reid; standard V.: Composition, Eileen Heatley and Albert Hansard; arithmetic, jack Smillie; standard IV: Special merit in history, Sol. Abraham; composition, Edith . Sylvester; general proficiency, W. Bryden; standard III.: Special merit in drawing and general knowledge, Maurice Donham; special merit in reading and writing, Marjorie D'Arcy. Standard II.: General proficiency, Bessie Tro.l----lope; general progress, Ken Oliver. Standard I.: General neatness, Bob. Davidson; general proficiency, Enid Varcoe. TERRACE END. The children massed in the playgrounds at the Terrace End School. They were addressed by the chairman of the school committee (Mr G. H. Stiles) who congratulated the pupils on tlicir year's work and wished both pupils and teachers the compliments of the season. He made reference to the departure of Miss Chapman and wished her bon voyage and a safe return. Mr F. T. Fairbrother replied on behalf of the teachers and returned thanks to his staff for their loyal cooperation during the year and to the committee for their" assistance and welcomed the visiting parents. Prizes were then presented by Mr Stiles to the following pupils:—Primer 111., Eric Cowlishaw and Enid Sinclair; primer IVa., Arthur Pilcher and Ada Cowlishaw; primer IVb. Claude Edmunds and Nancy Moore; standard la., Theo. Dahl and Mavis Mcßean; standard II)., Eric Collinsor. and Ethel Harvey; standard Ha. Maurice Shaw and Verlah Beattie; standard lib., Alan Newlands and Lois Allen; standard 111., Eraser McKenzie and Mavis Bowden; standard IVa. (boys only), John Allen; standard IVb., Stewart Mitchell and Marion Squire; standard V., Lyall Bycrofl and Kenneth Eraser (equal) and Edna Angus: standard VI., Guy Cameron and Vida Fleming. Mr A. W. Thompson's special for neatness, Vera Hocking. A special presentation wa? made to Irwin Redward. the winnei of the Gray Memorial Scholarship. Cheers for the committee, and foi Miss Chapman followed by the saluting of the flag and the singing of tin National Anthem terminated the function. LONGBURN SCHOOL. The Longburn School held theii second annual sports in connectioi. with their prize-giving festivities Beautiful weather conditions were responsible for the gathering beir\g a complete success. A large number o! parents and relatives of the scholarsattended. The prizes were presented by Mr C. Palmer, chairman of tin school committee who briefly addressed the chairman. He spoke on the efforts of the school committee to persuade the Education Department to erect, a new school building in the beautiful school grounds which had been laid out. He mentioned that Longburn was now first on the waiting list of schools required and would have the new school established a: soon as the money was available. In speaking of those who had assisted the school, he made special reference to Mr R. Tanner who had recently provided a new pavilion for the new tennis courts.
