LOCAL AND GENERAL.

To-day (December 21st) is the longest day of the year. Work in connection with installing the automatic telephone service for Palmerston North is being considerably hampered as a result of material not coming to hand. The effect of the proposed increased taxes on racing div.dends, stakes, and gates will be to increase the contribution by the racing public and clubs to the revenue by 233 per cent., says the Auckland "Star." Observers in Palmerston North saw a bright reflection in the western sky at about 10.30 o'clock last night, evidently of a lire of considerable proportions. No particulars wore available before the "Times" went to press.

The members of the Wellington Land Board —Messrs J. H. McClure, J. Dawson, A. J. Ellingham and J. Georgetti—were in Palmerston North yesterday. In company with Mr L. J. B. Grant (supervisor) they visited the various soldier settlements in this district.

The Manawatu Swimming Centre have arranged a monster swimming carnival on Wednesday, January 11th, when Warren Kealoha, one of the world's fastest swimmers, and holder of the world's back-stroke swimming record, will give an exhibition of tyie latest methods.

There are at present about IUO names on the waiting list for private and business telephone connections in Palmerston North. The Engineering Department of the local Post Office is concentrating on the work, and it is estimated that within three months a big majority of applications will be fulfilled.

A narrow escape from death was experienced by a Waitaki High School boy named Geoffrey Wain, aged seventeen years, a son of Mr P. Wain, of Waimate. He was assisting in stacking hay at Waimate, when a 20ft bluegum pole, used as a derrick, fell on him. He received a double compound fracture, of a leg.

It is not everyone- who knows that there are two kauri trees growing in the Christchurch Gardens (says the "Press.") The trees, which arc now 60 years of age, have not yet attained any substantial height, being scarcely higher than some shrubs. One is planted not far from the Ilolleston Street entrance to the rose gardens and the other is in the native shrubbery section.

A special general meeting of members of the Dannevirke and District Soldiers' Institute was held last night when the following motion was discussed: "That the active members of this Institute have no confidence in the present president and members of the management committee, and request their resignation forthwith. The motion was put to the meeting and defeated by 19 votes to 16.

There seems to be an exchange of trade between Palmerston North and HaAvke's Bay in the motor business. Messrs Bate and Bell built the bodies for the municipal motor busses for this city and now Messrs Collingwood and Elliott, of Palmerston North, have completed a sixteen passenger charabanc for the Albert Stables, Hastings. The job is an exceptionally pleasing one and should help to assist the already cordial relations between the two provinces.

A rumour is abroad that the Manawatu Racing Club's Christinas meeting is to be held on the Feilding Club's course. This is contrary to fact. At no time did the Manawatu Club desire to have its meeting run at Feilding. Presumably the rumour was set up by some person being under the impression the alterations to the appointments at Awapuni could not be completed in time.. The new totalisator will be in operation next week, and patrons to Awapuni will be agreeably surprised at the changes made.

The Post and Telegraph Department has not yet finally accepted tenders for the rural mail deliveries in the Palmerston North district. Residents on the Fitzherbert-Tintea, Kairanga and Whakaronga runs were recently asked by the Department to pay £1 per annum each towards the cost of delivering the mail. In previous years there have been no general charges. So far the residents have been slow in responding to the circular asking them to agree to the levy. ± "Manawatu Times" was Informed by the authorities yesterday that the position so far as Whakaronga is concerned was very doubtful but it was quite likely that the Department would receive sufficient response to continue the other two services.

Racing patrons at the Manawatu races this Christmas will be interested in the new totalisator house, which has just been completed and will be used this meeting. The building is one hundred and sixty feet long and is finished with face brickwork, painted black, plaster facings, and roofed with the Auckland Rooting Co., Ltd. s red cement tiles. Complete electrical machinery has been installed. The building is without doubt the. most imposing and up-to-date of Its kind in the Dominion, both internally and externally. The management of the clud are to be congratulated for their enterprise in erecting such a substantial and elaborate building for the convenience of the public*
