BUS ADVERTISING.

REVENUE v. UNSIGHTLINESS. "There is £240 worth of advertisement space on the busses," remarked Cr. M. H. Oram at the Palmerston North Borough Council last evening. So far, he said, the committee had been able to let only £64 worth of the space. It would probably pay the Council to let the whole of the space to some advertising firm, who would best know how to use it. Advertising was a matter for specialists, and It was best left in their hands to obtain the best results. Of course the advertisements would have to be subject to the manager's approval. The suggestion was that the matter should be left in the hands of the transit committee. In reply to an interjection that there should be no advertising on the outside of the busses, Cr. Oram said that was the advertising which was most sought after, and the source from which they would draw the most revenue. They must not lose sight of the fact that practically every transit system did advertise on the outside of the vehicles. While the committee wished to see the busses kept as neat as possible, they did not wish to throw money away. Cr. Eliott thought it would be a great pity to disfigure the busses for the sake of the small additional revenue they would receive. Cr. Oram mentioned that if advertising was permitted on the outside of the busses, it would only be on a narrow board running along the roof. They did not propose to placard the whole of the sides of the busses. The recommendation of the committee that it confer with representatives of advertising firms on the question was adopted.
