SHIPBUILDING TRADE.
SEVERE SLUMP IN ENGLAND. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Sunday, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 18. A Netherland Company has placed an order valued a,t £1,000,000 for two .liners, with a Continental firm, whose tender is 20 per cent, below the lowest quotation of Tees and Hartlepool firms. Three thousand workmen at Parkhead are immediately affected by the closing of Beardmore’s steel works. The suspension of work at Clydeside has surprised Sheffield firms, who did not expect such a quick decision. Sheffield is already suffering severely through unemployment. Sheffield firms criticize the proposed ten years’ naval holiday, on the ground that the production of armour and guns can only be kept at a high level by constant practice. A long cessation would find the country in a seriouslyweakened condition when the time came to resume operations.
