A London cable states that Lord Atholl succeeds Lord Sandhurst as Lord Chamberlain. Mr. Harold Gregson, the Auckland musician, who has been visiting America,, is returning by the Tahiti. Mr. J. H. Hamilton, supervisor on the staff of the New Plymouth post office, has received notice of transfer to Wanganui. Mr. T. G. Glasgow has been elected to represent the traffic and stores branch, North Island, on the Railway Board of Appeal. The Levin Chamber of Commerce will be represented at the Dominion Conference at Christchurch this week by Mr. A. C. Robins. Mr. J. McClure. Commissioner of Crown Lands, is expected to arrive in Palmerston North to-day. He will be staying at the Club Hotel. Mr. J. A. Young, M.P. for the Waikato, stated last week that in all probability ho will contest the new Ham. llton seat at the next general election. i Mr, T. A. Harris, solicitor, who has many relatives and friends in the Manawatu district, has been selected to contest the Mayoralty of Raetihi, which was recently constituted a borough, A very old resident of New Zealand, Mrs. Louisa Empson, has just died at the advanced age of 87 years. She arrived in New Zealand with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard, when a girl seven years of age. Mr. S. W. H. Chambers, assistant town clerk at the Thames, has been appointed assistant town clerk of Devonport, in succession to Mr. K. Kiernan, now town clerk of TeKuiti. There were 69 applicants. A very hearty welcome was extended Uy the P. and T. officers in Palmerston North at their smoke concert on Saturday night to Mr. R. R. Martin, who took over his duties as Postmaster for this tdivn. Mr. Trevor Hill, late of New Zealand Picture Supplies, has been appointed manager of the Princess Theatre at Auckland. Mr. Hill, who is an old Auckland boy, was until recently manager of His Majesty’s Theatre, Wanganui. His Grace Archbishop Cattaneo,Papal Delegate to Australasia, accompanied by Archbishops Redwood and O’Shea, will arrive in Palmerston North to-morrow afternoon from Hawke’s Bay. He will proceed to Wanganui and New Plymouth on Wednesday.

In proposing the toast of "The Outgoing Postmaster" (Mr. P. W. Craig), at the Palmerston Post and Telegraph Department’s smoke concert on Saturday evening, very complimentary reference to Mr. Craig was made by the three speakers to the toast, Messrs. J. Ross, P. Wimsett.and \V. Frederic. Mr. Craig, all agreed, had proved himself not only a capable and. thoroughly efficient officer during his period as acting postmaster, but he had also shown to his start all the qualities of a gentleman. He was leaving to take up his new duties in Wanganui with the respect, esteem, and affection of all the members of the start in Palmerston North, and they wished him and his family the best of good fortune in the future. Mr. Craig briefly .returned thanks, expressing regret at having to part company with the finest body of men and women with whom it had been his privilege to associate.
