THE RACING COMMISSION.
A week or two ago the odas werq, in sporting parlance, "a thousand to a gooseberry" that the report of the Racing Commission would be rejected by Parliament. A distinct change has, been discernible in political circles during the last few days. Although the House of Representatives is divided in opinion, there appears to be a strong movement in favour of accepting the report in a modified form. The action of the Racing Conference in declaring in favour of the report may, or may not, have a determining influence with the Legislature. The probabilities are that it will not, for there is a considerable body of public opinion that regards the Racing Conference with a measure of distrust and suspicion. However, the report is to come before the House in due course, and the responsibility for accepting, rejecting, or modifying it will be thrown upon the representatives of the people. Mr Massey is too astute a politician to make the question a party one, and ho will allow members to vote upon the issue as their individual plodges or prejudices may dictate.
