PUBLIC OPINION.

THE MAYORALTY. (To the Editor.) .... Sir, —I notice in this morning’s “Manawatu Daily Times” a letter from one of our estimable townsmen, Mr W. R. Birnie, referring to the coming Mayoral election. But I can hardly see the point of his discusssion. Mr Birnie candidly admits Mr Nash’s abilities for the position, but apparently he would place upon the shoulders of our worthy Mayor the responsibility of the present difficulty (with all public bodies over the Dominion) of obtaining the money for our borough loans. Now, I am a ratepayer in this borough and thoroughly believe in progression. If we don’t progress we will be left behind by the towns which have progressive men at the head of their public affairs. I would point out to Mr Birnie that the works which are now being carried out are ail for the necessary advancement of Palmerston North, and are progressing as circumstances and financial conditions will permit., J would also point out that the whole schedule of these public works was only adopted by the full council after many careful and earnest discussions, and when put before the ratepayers was (in every case) approved by large majorities. Personally, I am one of those who would like to see Mr Nash again installed as the elected head of this community, and I am sure this wish is shared by many other electors. We have in his ability in the guidance of the public affairs of this little city, of which we may justly feel proud.—l am, etc., ELECTOR.
