MAYOR’S HONORARIUM.
The Borough Council last evening, in accordance with notice of motion given by Cr. A. J. Graham, discussed the question of increasing the Mayor’s 'honorarium from £2OO to £250 per annum. While Councillors discussed the matter in jocular vein for the most part, it was agreed that the amount was not enough to compensate the Mayor for loss of time and the many financial calls upon him, incurred by virtue of the office. Cr. Oram suggested that a move should be made in the direction of securing payment for councillors’ services. While agreeing that the honorarium \vas insufficient, Cr. Ilodgcns disagreed with the principle of members of local bodies voting their own increases in salary, contending that it should be done by the ratepayers at the polls.—The motion was carried unanimously, ■
