CHESS.
On Tuesday evening, the President Mr A. E. Hodson presented the prizes won in the Chess and Draughts Club’s Handicap Tourney, in a neat speech expressing the thanks of the club to the donors, and pointing out the great improvement in play which had resulted from the tourney. The prizewinners are:—Mr K. Thorburn Ist. one guinea, presented by Messrs Collinson and Son; Mr E. W. Cave 2nd, wallet (N.Z. Importing Co.); Mr A. H. M. Wright 3rd, silver matchbox (D. M. George). The meetings of the club have been maintained by a few enthusiasts during the whole of the holiday season, but with its close has come renewed activity, and an attempt is being made to bring the club ladder up to date, as it is hoped to arrange intercluta matches during the coming season,- and teams will be chosen strictly according to ladder positions. A Wellington team is expected to visit Palmerston during the ensuing Easter. Ladder match results to date are as follow: —For rung 1 and the r championship, A. Whitaker challenged A. H. M. Wright, both players have scored a win, three wins decide, the match draws not counting. Some interesting finishes are anticipated, as both are playing carefully. Rev. H. G. Blackburne has secured rung 6 from E. W. Cave by 2J wins to 14, but failed in his attempt on rung 5. H. R. Thorburn retaining his position by 2-0. W. H. Mesenger successfully defended rung 4 against K. Thorburn (8) by 2-1; and A. E. Plodson rung 11 against L. Giorgi (12) by 2-0. The first game of a match A. Stewart (rung 9) v. A. E. Hodson (11) wap won by the latter.
