CHESS.
Before play commenced on Tuesday evening the president of the Chess and Draughts Club, Mr A. E. Hobson. presented the trophies to the winners in the recent teams' match, and expressed the thanks of the Club to the donor, Mi- L. Giorgi. The trophies, which were much admired, are of local manufacture, taking the form of a gold rook mounted on a silver medallion, and competition for their possession should do much to improve local chess. A handicap match game E. W. Cave v. A. Whitaker (Guioco piano) was very well contested, until a hurried 30th move lost the latter a rook and he resigned a few moves later. Two ladder games, A. E. Hodson v. L. Thorburn (queen's pawn), and T. A. Morine v. D. S. Columb were won by Hodson and Morine respectively. Mr W. Wring, of Wellington, has been appointed Palnierston delegate to the N.Z. Chess Association. News has been received that the long-looked-for match for the world's championship between Lasker and Capablanca, has been arranged and will take place at Havana in January next. Twenty-four games are to be played.
