SHANNON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) It was a large and representative gathering from the town and district which met in the Maoriland Theatre to say farewell to Mr Pickett, who has for some years been manager of the Bank of New Zealand in Shannon. The Mayor (Mr Murdoch), who occupied the chair, eulogised the work of Mr Pickett in the town. A number of toasts were drunk. Messrs Bovis, Pickhard and Thwaite gave recitations. Songs were sung by Messrs Pickhard, Curran, Stratford, Hemmingsen, Taurau and Hook. Miss Main also favoured the company with two songs. Mr J. Murray made a presentation of a substantial sum which had been subscribed by the residents, as a mark of their appreciation. Mr Pickett suitably replied. The company dispersed with cheers for Mr and Mrs Pickett and family. On Saturday the junior footballers defeated the Otaki juniors at Levin by 6 to 4. A first offender was fined 5/ for drunkenness and £1 for using language not permitted. Messrs Murdoch and Gunning, J’s.P., presided. The Justices issued a warning that, as bad language was becoming too prevalent in the public streets, the next offender would receive exemplary punishment.
