R.S.A, AND THE GOVERNMENT.

An extraordinary general meeting of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was held last night. About !« mombers were present, and Mi L. Jacobs presided. The Association regarded with concern the action of the Government in suspending grants to returned men tor land and houses under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act. Mr H. M. Haycock, in reporting on the proceedings at the conference, stated that one of the main planks laid down was that the Government should put into operation the Act relating to the compulsory acquisition of land, and payment by the Government in bonds, instead of cash. The president said that the only solution was for the Government to put into effect such legislation as would relieve it of paying actual cash. Had this been done, in more directions than one, it would have worked out. the economical salvation, lor country: prevented for which the soldier had to pay, and would have saved a tremendous amount of money in the vexed question of the cost of living. The Government had done much to increase the cost of living. He moved the following resolution: “That this meeting views with indignation and dissatisfaction the action of the Government in not adhering to its promise in regard to the suspension or stoppage of the provisions of the D.S.S. Act, and urges Hie Government to immediately find the means and machinery to purchase houses and build houses and find farm lands that may be require 1 by discharged soldiers.” The Motion was seconded by Mr \Vc.‘ckes and after discussion was car- , ricMj, tliore toeing only one dissentient voice.
