POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Pohangina County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Councillors H. W. Smart (chairman), R. Port, F. W. Arbon, S. J. Strahan, T. Beetham, A. Brooking, and PI. Osborne. It was decided to make and levy, a special rate of l-20d in the £ on the capital rateable value of all rateable property in the Coal Creek Riding with the exception of sections 4, 5, 6, T, S, 11a block 11. Pohangina S.D. and section 5. block VII., and section 34. block VI., Pohangina S.D., for the purpose of providing the instalments of principal and interest and other charges on a loan of £7OO for a house for the Coal Creek Riding roadman. It was also resolved to make and levy a rate of l-135d in the £ on th© capital rateable value of all the rateable property in the county for the purpose of providing instalments in respect of principal and interest and other charges on a loan of £BSO for an engineer's residence. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was dealt with as under: From the Feilding Borough Council’s electricity department suggesting amalgamation in the formation of a. Power Board to control a power district.—lt was decided to ask the writer to attend the next meeting and more fully explain the position. From the Stratford Borough Council asking support of a resolution asking the Government to make Saturday afternoon a universal half-holiday throughout the Dominion. — Received. From the Bay of Islands County. Council asking support of resolutions asking the Prime Minister to introduce legislation to either; (1) Give local bodies full power to enforce the payment of rates by Maoris or (2) providing for payment of native rates by the General Government. — Cr. Beetham said he understood such action would be contrary to the provisions of the Treaty of Waitangi.— The chairman said the Council did not know enough about the matter to express an opinion.—The letter was received. From the Hawera Borough Council asking for support of a resolution asking the Government to take the necessary steps for the removal of duty on children’s footwear.—Received. llr J. Beetham moved: “That the offices of the Pohangina County Council be removed from Pohangina to Raumai on account of lack of accommodation in Pohangina.”— Cr Osborne moved; “That the offices of the Pohangina County Council be transferred from Pohangina township to the township of Apiti.”—Both motions were held over. From the Minister for Lands (Hon. D. K. Guthrie) regarding the question of lifting the reservation from certain scenic, reserves in the district, stating that he was instructing the Department to make exhaustive investigations in the matter. asked th© Council to consider the matter at the next meeting.—Mr R. Cheyne waited on the Council with a request to sign a petition urging the Minister to lift the reservation. —The petition was laid on the table until the next meeting. A deputation from the Board of Management of the Willard Home for children, consisting of Mr and Mrs E. H. Crabb and Mrs Rowlands, waited on the Council asking for financial and other assistance towards the home. —Held over till next meeting. Messrs Tolley and Fitzpatrick, representing the Feilding Technical School, waited on the Council to ask financial support tow'ards the proposed technical agricultural high school at Feilding.—Held over till next meeting.

It was decided to charge 5 per centon the capital value where practical as rental for Council properties occupied by council employees. TREASURER’S REPORT,
