TERRACE END SCHOOL.
COMMITTEE MEETING.
The Terrace End School Committeo met last evening. Present: Messrs G. H. Stiles (in chair), R. Michie, S. H. Snell. A. J. Yortt, F. Hardy, W. Tillick. J. Davidson, and W. K. Kaye. The Ministers' Association wrote asking if half-an-hour on one day a week'could be allotted to their representatives for non-sectarian religious teaching in the school.—The above matter was the subject of considerable discussion. Certain members considered that the Sunday schools were the proper places for the imparting of religious knowledge and that work of that kind in State schools was generally a failure. It was decided, however, that six months trial, one day a week between 8.45 and 9.15 a.m. should be given, five voting for and three against. The headmaster (Mr Fairbrother) reported a total roll number of 675, with an average attendance of 503. Owing to an epidemic of sickness the school had been closed for a fortnight. On resuming there had been little improvement, and 177 were absent. During the past week, however, the attendances had been a little better, when Messrs Stuckey, Crawford, and Adams, the Board's inspectors, had paid a surprise visit.
