In the House of Commons, replying to Mr Bennett, who enquired with reference to the recent riots in Fiji, wherein the New Zealand troops were stated to have fired on the rioters, Mr Amery said that the only ease of firing was when the crowd; was engaged in wrecking bridges, and threatened to overwhelm a small body of Fiji police. Some revolver shots were fired, one striker being killed. Mr Amery added that on the whole the strike was conducted in an orderly manner. He saw no reason for interference, as the strike had now terminated, and a Government Commission, including Indians, was enquiring into alleged grievances.
