The Palmerston North Borough Council wrote asking if the County Council was prepared to meet the Borough Council to consider the advisability of the two councils setting up a combined committee to undertake the control of the supply and distribution of electricity within the boundaries of the borough and the county. The Borough Council suggested the holding of a conference between the tw r o bodies at an early date.—lt was decided to inform the Borough Council that the Kairanga County Council was quite agreeable to hold a conference with them at a date to be fixed by the Borough Council. '

FITZHERBERT WATER WORKS. The Fitzherbcrt water-works engineer (Mr E. Edwards) reported that the laying of all the cast iron service mains would be completed this week, making a total length of throe miles and sixty chains. There now remained 5 miles and 54 chains of small pipes yet to be laid.—Adopted. ENGINEER'S REPORT. In tho course of his report on the work, in hand during the month tho Engineer stated that the concrete culvert at the junction of Boundary Road with Gillespie’s Line, had been lengthened at one end and filled over to improve what was previously' rather a dangerous bend. About 2 miles of the Kairanga-Bunnythorpo Road had been scarified, trimmed into shape and rolled down and a considerable improvement effected, though tho road was too narrow for the amount of traffic it now carried. Similar work was done on | Roberts’ Line. On Rangitikoi Line about half a chain of concrete road had | been treated with prepared tar and ; sand. In company with engineers of , Palmerston and Manawatu County, the Engineer said an inspection had been made of tho banks of the Oroua River at Awahuri bridge where erosion was taking place. It was proposed to batter the bank and fell willows over same and secure them where neeessaiy with wires. The work would cost very little and it was hoped it would prevent further erosion. In connection with the soldier settlements the Engineer stated that the formation of tho head through the Kairanga settlement had been completed. During the month a total of 640 yards of shingle had boon carted out for use on this road. The reticulation of water from the artesian wells to the different sections had been carried out and all the farms were now supplied. A little further work remained to bo done before the scheme could be finally completed. The formation of the road through this settlement was j now practically completed and it was | expected to commence metalling at an early date. Regarding Government grants, he stated that in reply to a letter from the Public Works Department ho forwarded a schedule showing the order in which the Council preferred the grants to be authorised, tho total amount of which was £llOO, all being conditional to Council subsidising with an equal amount. Subject to the Government’s approval he proposed spending the Pahiatna Road grant of £250 (£ for £) in renewing old timber culverts and widening formation where

* necessary. In connection with Hoiherc Road grant (£250, £ for £) it would be necessary for interested settlers to raise a loan as subsidy for this grant so that the work might be proceeded with before the winter. The work on Scott's Road (£2OO, £ for £) would be similiar to that of the Pahiatna Road. It would be advisable to make a slight deviation in the road to make a better site for the now bridge on Roberts' Line, the bridge grant being £4OO, (£ for £) and for this purpose it would be necessary to purchase about a quarteracre of adjoining land. —The report was adopted.
