Mr Polk, head of the American • delegation, in conversation 'with Von Lersner, declared that -Germany "would commit a grievous error, which •would prove disastrous to Oier if she ; interpreted in her favour Washington's delay in the ratification of the Peace Treaty. He added that there was a divergence of opinion regarding the Treaty, but there'were no two opinions in the United States regarding Germany’s obligation, and the affection binding the Allieb, notably to France. Any attempt on the part of Germany to escape her ©taligations would accentuate the strong antiGerman sentiment existing in the United States.
