Thc Leader of the Opposition evidently favours the butter producers obtaining relief, for in the course o6shis speech to the Wellington Liberals, when dealing with the coat of living, he said: " Means must be secured to ensure that while ordinary business men get fair profit, any absurd and extortionate charge would bo impossible. While he wanted our producers to get the highest price for their exported produce, they had to consider the conflicting aspect of securing a reasonable price for the Now Zealand consumer, a class least able to bear it. They had been treated worse than any other section of the producers during the last two years, and in the interests of families in the cities, we should pay £IOO,OOO or £200,000 from the consolidated fund, as an adjusting fund, to allow r the people in the towns and cities to got this class of food cheaper, enabling men selling at lower prices than they could soli outside, to have an adjustment. ’’
