THIS WEEK’S TRAINS. (Per Press WELLINGTON. August 23. A considerable improvement in the railway service is announced by Mr Massey. It is proposed to reinstate trains next week as follows: —A passenger train to leave Invercargill on Monday, 25th, for Dunedin; a train from Dunedin to Christchurch on Tuesday, 26th; Auckland to Wellington at 7.10 p.m. on Tuesday, 26th; Wellington To New Plymouth on Tuesday, 26th, on the time of the former mail train with a connecting train from Palmerston North for Napier; Wellington to Auckland, noon, Thursday, 28th; New Plymouth to Wellington, Thursday, 28th, connecting with train for Napier at Palmerston North; Christchurch to Dunedin, Thursday, 28th, Dunedin to Invercargill, Friday, 29th. It is hoped to be able to continue the service on these lines regularly hereafter. Opportunity is being taken to utilise the return services in increasing the haulage of goods, particularly urgent timber from the principal sawmilling areas. The coal position is still far from satisfactory and the extended facilities depend upon the present coal position being maintained. There will be an additional passenger train from New Plymouth to Wellington, connecting at Palmerston, with a train from Napier on Tuesday in view of the opening of Parliament.
