BENZINE EXPLOSION.
PANIC IN CATHEDRAL SQUARE. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday night. This afternoon the people in Cathedral Square were startled by a terrific explosion, which occurred on the premises occupied by Mr W. J. Bull, typewriter export, Chancery Lane, adjoining Everybody's Picture Theatre, which was holding a session at the time. The audience included many children, who were considerably startled, and a panic was narrowly averted. The whole of Mr Bull’s workshops and office wore badly damaged. A youth, Charles McGlashan, was cleaning a typewriter with benzine when it became ignited and caused the explosion. Mr Me-Glashan was badly burnt about the face, and sustained several severe cuts. He was removed to the hospital. Large sections of the walls of the workshop were blown out, and the ceiling fell in. All the windows in the immediate vicinity were shattered. The wall dividing the workshop from Everybody’s Theatre bulged out. but has not collapsed.
