UNREST IN JAPAN.
SERIOUS OUTBREAKS FEARED. [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Saturday, 2.40 p.m.) TOKIO, August 22. Rising prices and scarcity of houses arc causing widespread discontent, especially in the middle classes. Serious outbreaks are feared. The police dispersed mass meetings of teachers in several towns, which were protesting against inadequate salaries, A newly-formed Salaried Men’s Union at Tokio demands that profits, exclusive of bank interest on capital, shall be equally divided between employers and workers. Newspapers warn the Government to make preparations for the advent of socialism, which is due to the enormous increase in the cost of rice and cotton cloth. The Minister in a communication has announced that the Japanese merchant beet had been increased 40 per cent, dining the war. New construction is confined to standardised cargo boats.
