The price of milk will be raised to sp£d per quart from Ist May till Ist September. A newly erected convent school was opened at Pahiatua by ArchbL- p O’Shea on Sunday. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., have declared an interim dividend of 5 per cent, payable on May 15th. The annual meeting of the Marta■watu Permanent and Equitable Building and Investment Society will be held at the ollice or the Society at 4 p.m, today. The annual meeting of the Ladies’ Golf Club, which was called for yesterday afternoon, has been postponed until Friday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. at All Saints’ club room. The Public Works Department are requiring 40 good labourers for road construction work ou the Mangahao Power Scheme. The work will be let in sections to small gangs on the co-operative contract system. Speaking at the annual meeting of householders at College Street last night the chairman of the committee, Kev. A. Doull, M.A., tin answer to a question, stated that the school was built to hold 445, the number on the roll being GlB and the average attendance 550. Etc also stated that the headmaster, Mr D. W. Low, had been compelled to refuse to take pupils for the primer classes.

A ballot at Damievirko to decide whether Messrs Eossitcr or Ferguson should be the special railway delegate appointed, resulted in a dead-heat. He also has agreed to make time for several candidates for the Council to speak. Councillors E. L. Broad will preside. The only two members of the 191S--19 committee who offered themselves for re-election at the Campbell Street School householders meeting last night, Messrs Mahon and Mellor, Avere returned. Of a progressive ticket of eight issued prior to the meeting, seven members were selected.

The Commonwealth Government has offered £IO,OOO to the first aviator who makes a flight between England and Australia. J. C. Williamson, L£d., has supplemented the offer by another £IO,OOO provisionally on the aviator landing on the roof of His Maesty’s Theatre, Melbourne, during the run of “Going Up.” Some amusement was caused at the meeting of householders of College Street School last night when some wag turned off the gas-meter and plunged the meeting into darkness. It was some minutes before tho light was restored, owing to the fact that there was no one present who knew where the meter was situated. Pastor Kies, a candidate for the Dannevirke Borough Council and Hospital Board addressed a big meeting in the Town Hall last night. He gave a vigorous and trenchant criticism of Borough administration and hospital affairs. The meeting was very entertaining, and a number of questions were asked. The speaker was accorded a very favourable reception.

Early on Sunday morning a fire occurred at Duvauchellc's Bay, Akaroa, the County Council Chambers, post office and a private residence being destroyed. People were sleeping in all three buildings, but escaped unharmed. Many valuable books, and maps were destroyed. The Council Chambers was insured for £SOO, but the other insurances are unknown.

At last night's meeting of householders at the College Street School, a suggestion was made that, while .(the meeting was waiting for the result.of the ballot, a collection in aid of the school library fund should bo taken up. The idea was immediately adopted and the sum of £2 7/10% collected, which with the Government subsidy will make an addition of £5 to the funds.

Mr C G. Hodgson raised a question at last night’s meeting of the College Street householders in connection with literature of an advertising nafurc being distributed among the children in the school during school hours, aJid stated that it was a thing that would not be allowed in any other school. Both Mr D. W. Low (headmaster) and Kev. A. Doull (chairman) stated they had no knowledge of any such distribution being made.

A letter received by the Mayor (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.) from Sister M. A. Early, matron of the Aotoa Home at Heliopolis, Cairo, states that probably thc homo ■would be closed by the end of March and all the New Zealanders out of Egypt early this month. The letter concluded by again expressing thanks for the many remembrances from New Zealand of the Aotea Homo, the numerous and various gifts hav ing always been highly appreciated.

The Dannevirke North School Committee met last night, Mr Bott presiding. The long-drawn-out school ground asphalt contract was discussed. There has been pinch comment on the alleged unsatisfactory nature of the work. It was decided to try and obtain a copy of the specification and all correspondence in connection with the matter. A sum of £lB is still owing on the contract. The Education Board has notified tlic appointment of Miss McPherson us assistant infant mistress.

A notable item for the programme of the Orpheus Society's concert to-mor-row night will be the beautiful "in Memoriam,” by Dudley Buck, to bo rendered as a tribute to those who have fallen in the war. For the rest of the programme a varied selection has been prepared. Vocal, marches, humorous part-songs, Granville Bantock s grand Cavalier songs, three numbers from the Greek Anthology by Elgar, and _ the Plantation Lullaby will also be given. A talk song arranged for men s voices by the conductor will Vie reudeicd.

\t hist night’s meeting of householders of the Campbell Street School District, the chairman, Mr A. J. Mahon, announced that the school baths in spite of an unfortunate season, were now practically free from debt, ihe only amount remaining, was £o //o in interest which he hoped would be su - scribed that evening. The amount was oencrouslv subscribed in the room, leaving the baths free of debt. The committee has practically made a present of £1035 worth of property to the Board, the subsidy amounting to only £4OO. The section above cost £1335 i/m The baby-voting carnival realise £728 15/ towards the cost of the baths and the rest was made up in donations and entrance fees. The committee has put up a fme record, considering that the baths have only been in use two seasons.
