During the prize-giving ceremony at the croquet green yesterday, Mr E. H. Crabb stated that it was hoped that before very long there would be tennis courts constructed alongside the greens, for the younger people.

The Mayor notifies that, owing to a severe cold, he has been unable to address the electors, but will do so on Tuesday evening, when several candidates for the Council will also speak, at the conclusion of his address. A lire broke out about .10 o'clock last evening in one of the outbuildings attached to Mr Bang Lee's laundry in Main Street. The local fire brigade were quickly on the spot and extinguished tho blaze before any serious damage was done. Nothing could be ascertained as to how the fire occurred. Mr H. C. Le Grange, secretary of the College Street School, has received official information that adults who are living in rented rooms are classed as householders, and as such are entitled to vote at the forthcoming school committee elections, provided that they have been resident in the school district for three months. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday before Mr C. V. Clausen, J.P., Joseph Hannon, alias Barney Gannon, against whom there were a number of previous convictions, was fined 5s for having been drunk, in default three days' imprisonment. An old man, who had broken his journey at Palmerston while on his way from Hawera to the Old People's Home at Featherston, and was found drunk in a public street on Thursday evening, was convicted and discharged with a caution.

The Parliamentary Industries Committee will sit in Palmerston North next Tuesday afternoon for the purpose of taking whatever evidence may be tendered in connection with the development of Dominion industries. The committee arrived here yesterday morning by the Auckland express, and left in°the afternoon for Napier, the intervening hours being spent in a run round the town as guests of the Mayor. The chairman of the committee is Mr C. A. Wilkinson, M.P. for Egmont, and the other Parliamentary members are Messrs T. K. Sidey (.Duncdin South), J. Craigie (Timaru), H. Poland (Ohinemuri), W. A. Veitch (Wanganui), K, P. Hudson (Motueka), and G-. Forbes (Hurunui). Mr A. E. Brlggs is secretary to the commission, and Messrs H. P. Cameron and W. Berry, of the "Hansard" staff, are reporting the proceedings.

At the mooting of the parishioners of St. Peter's Church, Terrace End, on Thursday evening, stops wcro taken to make a separate parish for St. Peter's. The matter was referred to by the vicar in his address to the meeting. He stated that in order to help the new parish, contributions would be made by All Saints' vestry for three years, while he was also prepared to ask the synod to make a grant. On the" motion of Mr Portcous it was unanimously decided: "That this meeting of the parishioners of St. Peter's Church considers that it is in the interests of the church to be made a separate parochial district, and requests the consent of the annual meeting of parishioners of All Saints' Church to this course being taken." The vicar stated that the boundaries of the propos'ed parish would be, roughly, up Russell Street, thence by Boundary Road, taking in Kelvin Grove, thence to Mr J. D. Grant's residence at. At last night's meeting of the parishioners of All Saints' Church, the vicar announced that the foundation stone for the new Sunday School building would be laid next Sunday by the Rev. (Robert Young, vicar of.Carterton and at one time curate art All Saints'. The morning service would be arranged especially for the children. Anzac Day passed quietly in Palmerston. A sitting of the Conciliation Council was held at the Courthouse yesterday, when the hearing was continued of a claim for an award by the restaurant, tearoom and marble bar employees of the country districts of Wellington province. Mr W. Newton (Conciliation Commissioner) presided, the assessors for the employers being Messrs W. S. Dustin, J. J. Whitehead, J. J. Madden and J. Hodgson, for the Employers' Association Mr W. McKenzie, and for the employees Messrs W. T. Wright, H. O'Malley, and E. Kennedy. A complete agreement -was arrived at both in Palmerston Ndrth and Wanganui, the award providing for union wages, holidays, etc. Further sittings of the Council' are to be held at Napier and Masterton before the dispute is finally settled.
