THE FRENCH MISSION.

PALMERSTON VISIT. The Mayor (Mr J. A. Nash, M.P.) received the following telegram from Hamilton on Tuesday, signed by Mr J. 11. Barr, who is in charge of the party on behalf of the New Zealand Government: — "General l'au and members of French Mission will leave Wanganui for PalmerstoTi at $ a.m. on January sth. They will motor to Wellington same day via Wairarapa. Th« stay in Palmerston will necessarily be very brief. Suggest you entertain party, ten in number, at morning tea. Reply Rotorua.'' The Mayor replied yesterday as follows:—"Understand Wairarapa now excluded. You should reach Palmerston 1.1 o'clock. Will the General make a speech in Square and afterwards have early dinner as guest of Major and Councillors?'' As the telegraph office at Rotorua was closed until 7 p.m., a reply from Mr Barr is not expected till this morning.
