DIPHTHERIA EPIDEMIC.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —-A groat deal is being said about tlie present diphtheria epidemic, but as

far as I can gather, little is being done to prevent a recurrence of same. The present system of having a district j health officer to look after several hunI dred square miles would be a joke, if the consequences were not so serious. In more civilised parts of the world a i systematic, compulsory garbage removal scheme exists, and a house to house inspection made by municipal sanitary police, whose duty it is to inspect all back yards, with power to act if necessary. Prevention is better than cure. —I am, etc.. HARCOURT FEAT. Palmerston North, July 27, 1918.
