REV. ASPLAND LECTURES,

The Congregational Hall was crowded last night when the Rev. Macdonald. Aspland lectured on Oliver CromwellThe Rev. H. Grinstcad presided. Mr Aspland traced the life and work of Oliver Cromwell through the stormy days of the civil war and showmd how his legislation, drastic as it was, had been responsible for a, great improvement in the building up of our strong and democratic nation. He was not a perfect man. but was a man of fearless character and a man who dared to be right. in the discussion that followed, Mr | Pariane suggested that the Minister for Education be urged to see that the children have a proper knowledge of history as our children had uo knowledge of our evolution as a people. Several others took part in the discussion, and on the motion of the Rot. A. Donll, ALA., a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer. MOTION OF APPRECIATION. The following resolution was proposed by the Rev. Grinstcad and carried: “That the members of the Palmerston North branch of the P.P.A., having heard with sincere regret of the approaching departure of the Rev. Macdonald Aspland. desire to place on record their appreciation of his many services rendered to the cause of Protestantism during his five years’ ministry in the district and of the consistent manner in which he has, both as a Minister of the Gospel and a public man. laboured for the good of the people. They feel that in losing him the people of Palmerston North are sustaining a loss that will not easily be made good, and they earnestly wish for him in his now sphere of work, a continuance and enlargement of those opportunities for usefulness of which ho has so largely availed himself in Palmerston North. Feeling that in him the people have an earnest friend and wellwisher and sympathiser in those ideals which make for the uplift of humanity :*id one who has been always a stalwart champion of those eternal truths upon which the foundations of true liberty and justice rest. They pray for him and Mrs Aspland a happy and prosperous future.”
