Sir Douglas Haig reports: — Two enemy counterattacks in the Thiepval area were severely handled and repulsed. Between July 1 and Septembr 30, we captured twenty-nine heavy guns and heavy howitzers, ninety-two field guns and field howitzers, 103 trench artillery pieces and 397 machine guns.

OPPOSITION TO CONSCRIPTION.

It is believed that Mr Redmond will declare against conscription but it is not improbable that a national recruiting scheme will be suggested to maintain the strength of Irish regiments. The Kerry County Council has passed a resolution warning the Government that the enforcement of conscription will result in turmoil and bloodshed.

Kaiser Goes to East Front.
