KOVEL THREATENED.
Germans Desperate. LINE MUST BE HELD AT ALL COSTS. ("Tintes" Service.) (Received Friday, 12.15 a.m.) PETROGRAD, Oct. 5. } The Germans are endeavouring at *all costs to hold the space between Kovel and Lemberg, whereon mainly .depend the other issues of German •strategy on the Russian front. k' It is semi-omcially stated that Germany since September- has despatched divisons to the southern sectors. This, with twelve despatched 'in June, makes twenty-four rto reinforce the south-western front. Out of twelve that arrived in September, nine divisions are now defending Kovel and its approaches, where Tlindenburg in mid-September had thirty-one. Russian critics predict an obstinate at Kovel and opine a most concentration, by which lean be guaged the importance the «enemy command attaches to the Vlad-imir-Volynski region.
Falls in the Sea.
TATE OP "ZEPP." RAIDER. (Aust. and N.Z. Cablo Association.) (Received Thursday, 9.15 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 5. Esbjerg fishermen sighted on Monday at midday what was evidently «me of Sunday's Zeppelin raiders semisubmerged, thirty-live miles off Sylt. She was surrounded by German torpedo boats and destroyers. Two larger vessels alongside were seen attempting to keep the airship afloat.
"Zepp" Badly Damaged.
(Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Thursday, 8.10 p.m.) AMSTERDAM, Oct. 4. Friesland reports state that one returning Zeppelin on Monday was severely damaged. She had her stern cut off, and was sailing with difficulty.
French Raiders.
DESTROY BIG "ZEPP." (Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Thursday, 5.35 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 4. German messages state that French airmen raided Mannheim on September 22 and destroyed a Zeppelin, 750 Vfcet in length.
Surgical Methods.
BATTLEFIELD REFORMS. (Aust and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received Thursday, 8.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 4. Dr. Alexis Carrel, the famous surgeon of the Rockefeller Institute, announces the adoption of reforms in surgical methods throughout France resulting in a vast diminution of amputation and fatal wounds; also of the use of Dakin solution for wounds, rendering possible much grafting of tissue, bone and flesh, hitherto impracticable on a large scale. Another reform is the adoption of the American system of speeding up the transport of the wounded. [Dakin solution is a solution of hypo chlorite, commori salt, chloride of lime and boracic acid.)
