On Gallipoli
ARTILLERY AND AIR FIGHTING. Received 10.15 p.m.
LONDON, Sept. 27,
The War Office reports that the recent operations on Gallipoli were mainly confined on both sides to aircraft attacks, artillery bombardments and some mining. The Turks on occasion sent heavy artillery fire on the Suvla and Anzac fronts, which apparently preluded a general attack, but only attack by a small force followed upon the right centre at Suvla. Our rifle fire easily dispersed the enemy. The same thing happened twice subsequently. The enemy aeroplanes more than once attacked our aircraft base and dropped bombs, but did no damage. We counter-attacked, and our bombs blotted out a hangar and damaged shipping at Burgaz. The Turks on the night of the 24th let loose watch dogs against a French patrol. The dogs were all shot.
