He said that the aim of the Social Democrats was to quicken the social conscience and by earnest and energetic propoganda to make the people, more fully realise the responsibility that rested upon their shoulders since they were given the right to vote and elect their own Governments. He said it was only by completely understanding all those evils known as social problems that they could expect to elect a Government that would successfully grapple with them. Mr Thorn dealt also with the land question, banking, civil service reform and taxation. He was listened to attentively throughout his address. At ttie conclusion one question was asked, and a vote of thanks to the speaker was carried by acclamation.

Jennings, Liberal-Labour candidate for Taumarunui, addressed a meeting last night. He complained of unfair treatment by newspapers, and read apologies for false statements. He held that the present prosperity of the country was due to Liberal legislation. He favoured closer settlement, as in Belgium. He cordemned expensnve railway stations while money was needed for the back blocks, and objected to an irresponsible Board usurping the powers of County Councils. He promised to support the remission of rents on Crown lands under the Bush and Swamps Act for four or live years, and gave an illustration of the advantages of cheap money. A vote of thanks and confidence in the candidate was carried unanimously.
