PALMERSTON-KAIRANGA RIVER BOARD.

OBJECTORS' PETITION PRESENTED TO MINISTER, A FAVOURABLE REPLY. PROBABLE ROYAL COMMISSION. (Special to Times.) WELLLINGTON, June 1. A deputation (Messrs Coles, Tasker, Edwards and Mellsop) from Palmerston, introduced by Mr D. Buick, M.P., waited on the Hon. H. D. Bell, Minister for Internal Affairs, to-day and presented a petition, signed by 1144 ratepayers, praying for the abolition of Palmerston North-Kairanga River District. A scheme of river improvement estimated to cost £12,000 had been formulated by the Board's engineer which the petitioners considered would be of no practical value to the district. It was contended that the amount of erosion was comparatively small and that it would be better if" the river were left alone. The Minister replied that there was power to give effect to the request of the petitioners and he could only exercise his discretion in accordance with some independent advice. _ lie would, therefore, institute enquiries, possibly by means of a Royal Commission, as to whether it would be better to continue the Palmerston North-Kairanga Board in existence or have one Board to control the river from the Gorge to the sea.
