Since the forgery of the banknotes reported in Auckland the police had kept a sharp look- out on all vessels from the Dominion but had failed to spot any suspects arriving. The movements f a foreigner, however, aroused suspicion and lie was closely watched. To-mght a strong force of detectives paid a surprise visit to a lodginghouse at Redfern and arrested a foreigner while at dinner. On searching his room they discovered a complete plant for printing banknotes including a press, printers' ink, valuable lenses, prepared plates for etching and a £1 National Bank note while under his pillow was a loaded automatic pistol.
